EVA Foam

EVA foam is one class of widely used foam in which EVA stands for ethylene-vinyl acetate. It is a copolymer of Ethylene and vinyl acetate. Eva foam can be used as an effective substitute for many harmful chemical products used in the manufacturing process. It is an apt substitute for natural rubber, vinyl, neoprene, polyurethane and PVC foams, wood composites, felts, fiberglass, and mineral wool. In EVA foam, most part is made up of ethylene, and less percentage of vinyl is used and depending on this percentage of vinyl acetate used in EVA, its use in material differs.

PROPERTIES

The EVA foam material has certain specific properties:

  • Provides good gloss and clarity
  • Remains strong at low-temperatures
  • Retains its resistance to UV radiation and stress-cracking
  • Possesses hot-melt adhesive waterproof properties
  • Good low temperature properties and are generally tough
  • Vinegar like odour
  • buoyant material and low water absorption
  • High flexibility and versatility
  • Ultra violet resistant
  • High resistance to chemicals
  • TYPES

Depending on the percentage of VINYL ACETATE (VA) in EVA copolymer, its industry usage varies.

  • If EVA has up to 4% of VA then it is preferably processed as Thermoplastic material with a high gloss and low density.
  • If EVA has percentage of VA ranging from 4% to 30%, then it is used as thermoplastic elastomer material. It is generally used as adhesives.
  • If EVA has high percentage of VA i.e. above 40%, then it has rubber like characteristics and is used in various rubber based applications.
  • APPLICATIONS

EVA foam can be employed in vivid range of usage like-

  • Variouskinds of appliances, automotive, building, marine, electronics, healthcare, packaging, sports, leisure, and recreation, and footwear.
  • EVA emulsions are developed into adhesives used in packaging, bookbinding, bonding plastic films, metal surfaces, and coated papers.
  • EVA used in hot melt adhesives like wax, resin, and hot glue sticks,
  • EVA has various biomedical usages
  • EVA foam used in various rubber applications like footwear sole, sports equipment, padding in sport shoes for giving shock absorption characteristics, helmets, Boxing gloves, fishing rod, Yoga and fitness mats, packaging solutions etc.
  • covering material for crystalline silicon solar cells
